Such an underrated movie Since most of you reading this have probably never seen or even heard of What's Eating Gilbert Grape I will give you all a little synopsis. A young man named Gilbert Grape lives in s small town that nothing ever really happens in. With a mentally disabled brother and an over weight mother who never leaves home, he has a lot of problems, until a girl arrives from out of town. The movies plot sounds very basic, which it is, but the acting and relatable characters make for an enjoyable experience. Johnny Depp plays a very withdrawn human being who works at a local grocery store that is competing with the big retail grocery store across the street. He does a very solid job and I found it weird to see him in a role other than Jack Sparrow or Edward ScissorHands. Anyway the character that truly took my breathe away was Leonardo Dicaprio. He does an amazing job playing a mentally disabled person you almost think he actually is one. I have no idea how he did not win best Supporting Actor. And took him until 2016 to win his first Oscar. The film is very sad and gets very tense at times. The way Gilbert feels is what I'm sure everyone has felt before, being ashamed of your family and being so angry at yourself that you feel the need to take it out on other people. So the theme was really good and well executed. Probably one of the best movies you have never seen. The only issue I had was the movie felt a bit to long, but still very entertaining. |
